The Republican senator posted a tweet on Monday criticizing Biden for spending time at his family home in Delaware during the August recess amid White House renovations and COVID-19 recovery. On Tuesday, Scott was found to be spending the congressional recess on a luxury yacht in Italy, according to Axios.

“Another week of President Biden vacationing in Delaware vs. working at the White House,” Scott tweeted on Monday.

“If he loves to travel so much, I’ve got some suggestions as to where he should go next,” he added, while including a poll with all three answers as “The Southern Border.”

The news of Scott’s trip set many Twitter users off, calling out the senator’s “hypocrisy” for vacationing himself.

“How’s Italy Rick?” one user asked. “Pretty laughable this guy talks trash about Biden going to Delaware, while he’s on a yacht that costs more than an average American will make in a lifestyle. The hypocrisy is out of control!”

The phrase, “How’s Italy?” was trending on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon.

The Lincoln Project, a conservative-leaning political action committee (PAC), replied to Scott’s tweet with the same question, tweeting, “How’s Italy treating you?”

Scott is already taking some heat for his management as the chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC). The NRSC is the primary organization working to raise funds and support Republican candidates in the GOP’s bid to take back the majority in the upper chamber of Congress.

The Washington Post reported last week that campaign advisers have been asking “where all the money went and to demand an audit of the committee’s finances” as the NRSC seems to be running low on funds.

“How’s Italy? What’d you do with all the NRSC money?” another Twitter user asked on Tuesday.

Several of Scott’s fellow NRSC members have defended the senator online. Stu Sandler, the political director for the NRSC, wrote on Twitter on Tuesday, “Hats off to @axios for a truly idiotic story. Rick Scott is celebrating his 50th anniversary. When you get to 50, I hope you get equal treatment.”

NRSC spokesperson Chris Hartline told Axios, “Sen. Scott took a couple days to celebrate his 50th wedding anniversary with his wife and family – a trip that was planned more than a year ago.”

Hartline also told Newsweek in a statement, “You should report on more important and interesting things than gossip from an outlet like Axios.”
