Dorman, 24, and Hixon, 22, scored 450.21 points over six dives in Wednesday’s final, finishing second to Chris Mears and Jack Laugher of Great Britain (454.32). China’s Cao Yuan and Qin Kai took bronze (443.70).

It was the second consecutive medal for the U.S. in the event after Troy Dumais and Kristian Ipsen won bronze four years ago in London. Dorman and Hixon beat out that veteran duo to earn a spot in Rio at the U.S. trials in June. It’s the first Olympics for both divers.

Their silver came two days after U.S. teammates David Boudia and Steele Johnson placed second in the synchronized 10-meter platform event.
